kernel upgrade

To prove the accuracy of the new ‘30 second RedHat kernel upgrade’ howto document freshly posted in myrddin.org/howto, I have attempted to upgrade the kernel in my linux gateway box at home from kernel 2.4.2-2 to 2.4.3-12 and it has worked flawlessly :)

fuxin’ machine

posted @ 7:42 am on Thursday, July 26, 2001

Well, I am officially pissed off mith my pc at the moment. 3 reinstalls yesterday, countless hardware reconfigurations, lots of swearing, and a few beers later, I have myself sitting and watching a dodgy dos style screen erasing my disks.
In an effort to figure out why my drives are not performing anywhere as well as they should, I have removed all suspiscious devices (SCSI Cards, etc), reseated cards in different slots, disabled the onboard raid controller to get the machine to the exact same specs to Steve’s machine (which is virtually identical ‘cept he has no RAID controller on his Abit KT7A board).
After removing the 2 40Gb drives from the RAID-0 set, it seems the disks have corrupted information on them and no 3rd party disk formatting or partitioning utility can erase or read the data.
So, back to the ‘Dos screens’, I have been sitting and waiting patiently for the damn thing to finish ‘erasing’ my disk so I can start a fresh. One drive took all night to complete, and I kicked off the last one just before I left for work this morning.
I hope it fixes the screwed partitioning information. Win2k wasn’t happy at all displaying the drives as ‘Unknown or Damaged partitions’. The amusing part was the fact that the first drive was registering as being a 460Gb drive… if only eh?

rc5 team’s best day so far!

Well, hows this for picking up the pace?

myrddin.org completed 8,224 blocks yesterday at a sustained rate of 25,551 Kkeys/second!
myrddin.org is ranked #538 for yesterday!
The odds are 1 in 5,485 that this team will find the key before anyone else does.

and as you can see from my stats alone:

6,927 blocks were completed yesterday (0.00001008% of the keyspace)
at a sustained rate of 21,521 KKeys/sec! Ranked 931 for the day.

Well, I must say that i am VERY impressed with the way the Tactical-Operations Beta 2 has turned out. The graphics have improved significantly since beta 1.6
Aside from the current known bugs, I suggest it one of the few ‘Must Get’ mods for Unreal Tournament :)

That dodgy 45Gb HDD has been put temporarily to some good use. It is back in my Athlon 1.3GHz machine, with the KT7A-RAID, GeForce2Ultra, but with a superior OS installed. Yes, its got Linux running on it :)
A screenshot can be found here
