week of mayhem

Well, I did not have a very pleasant week last week. It was my first time oncall for my new Linux team. Last weekend I managed to get 15 calls on the Saturday alone which was not very pleasant at all. Things were better during the week with about 1-2 calls each night.

I was freaking out about going on call the week prior, but with the ‘Baptism of Fire’ into oncall for the IBM Linux team I think I handled it pretty well and can now deal with anything *touches wood*.

On another note, I have just upgraded Sara’s machine this weekend which is now spec’ed higher than mine! AMD 2800+ CPU, 512Mb PC3200 Memory and an Asus A7V600 board. Goes pretty well, and I’d love to see linux on it, but I somehow don’t think she will let me do that :P
I am waiting for the prices to drop on the Athlon 64’s and will eventually upgrade to that… but as it stands, my current AMD 2400+, 512Mb PC2700, GeForce4 4600 & Asus a7v333 is running quite happily with Debian Unstable, Gnome 2.4.1 & kernel 2.6.3 so there is no real need to upgrade right now :)

valentines day

Yesterday was the 5th year anniversary that Sara and I have been together. Didn’t do much considering I was locked into starting a change for work… That same change happened to span over today as well which was a pain in the arse as it is valentines day.

Thankfully I ordered Sara a dozen roses which arrived around midday. I had no chance to go out and get some today as I was continuing the SAN change for work, which was *supposed* to finish by 2pm, but didn’t actually complete until 8:30pm.

So at the end of the day, we watched some DVD’s and drank some wine. Right at the moment I am wondering why I cannot get frame buffer to work correctly under the new debian 2.6 kernels and when I am going to sort out the whole NIS migration I had planned for last week… I am running severely short of hours in a week now :\

oh the joys of ldap

Well… I spend countless hours on the weekend wasting my brain away over the task of configuring LDAP on Debian. Sadly I didn’t fully complete what I had set out to do. There seems to be a great abundance of information about LDAP, but almost all of the howto’s, guides or web sites with any information are all missing critical components. After 2 days of fighting with configurations and such I decided to settle the score with a nice bottle of red ;-)
Needless to say, the configuration here at home is still only 3/4 complete and likewise with its howto. I dare not go back and see how many times my howto document was updated and modified on my private wiki.

Hopefully if time permits, I will get the rest of it done next weekend. I also want to get NIS sorted so lets hope I can get started on that around the same time :)
