life in the fast lane

Things have been super busy with all things work related. Lots of hours, not enough time off… Things have been getting pretty interesting though. Lots of our recurring problems have been solved with RHAS2.1’s e40 kernel along with a patch from RedHat for vm which fixes our LowMem exhaustion problems with oracle. This has allowed us to get on with more project related tasks which has been great.

Current things on my plate at the moment are getting 28 IBM xSeries HS20 blade servers up and running initially with RedHat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 2.1, tho later down the track these should be upgraded to RHEL AS 3.0 which means a *lot* more of our day to day issues will be fixed. This also pretty much doubles our non-prod server fleet (dev/test etc). I can only assume that a similar setup will be pushed to production environments. Given that they are considerably different to the fully populated x440/x445 servers that the environment is currently running on, 8 way CPU & 16Gb of ram compared to the HS20’s 2 CPU & 8Gb ram… Will be interesting how they perform once Oracle starts molestoring them.
