Oooohh.. fluxbox

After eyeing off dave’s desktop on his work laptop work, I decided to move myself from a gnome/openbox combo to fluxbox on my own. I’ve used fluxbox in the past, especially on my old dodgy laptop but the default configs are pretty minimal, the default themes kinda suck and unless you find the right doco can be a bit of a bitch to configure just the way ya like it.

However… dave had quite a few pointers in the right direction and now i’ve gone from configuring my work laptop to fluxbox to even moving away from my home gnome & nautilus combo to .. yes, you guessed it, fluxbox ;-) *shock horror!* I’ve been a gnome fanatic for such a very long time so its a big thing for me to move my home config to say the least.

I haven’t had really that long to stuff around with it, but I’m more than less satisfied with it on my dualhead system. 2 x 19″ crt’s @ 1600×1200 resolution (yes, one day i’ll get a pair of fat assed 20″+ lcd’s *drools*). Fluxbox does better than most windowmanagers and knows that I have 2 displays and I can tell it exactly where to stick the toolbar ;-) This is normally not an issue when the windowmanager knows you’re using xinerama, but the nvidia twinhead approach always seems to suck on certain other wm’s so this impressed me somewhat :)

At the moment I’m screwing around, trying to locate a sexy new font for my Eterm’s but once I do I might even take a screeny :)

Thought I’d share some of the firefox extensions that I seem to like recently as well as those I’ve been using for quite some time. They are:

new camera

Its only taken me about 18 moonths, but I have finally gotten off my ass and bought a Canon EOS 350D SLR Digital Camera and I must say it rocks! I’ve already taken several hundred photo’s with it and am pleasently impressed with it. It replaced my previous Pentax film SLR, and its been oh so worth it.

I’m an amateur photographer but I hope to increase my photographic skills. I’m not one to edit my digital SLR pics with the likes of The Gimp (the opensource linux equivalent to Photoshop in the win32 world) which happens to be the rage these days after extensively looking at flickr so I like to ensure my photo’s are well thought out and taken appropriately.

The 350D kit I bought came with the standard 18-55 lense as well as a 90-300 lense, case, cf card and a bunch of other things for the price of what was normally the body & the 18-55 lense, so I was rather pleased with that. Since then I realised that one can consume a 512Mb cfcard *very* damn quickly when pics are taken @ 3456×2304 resolution so I picked up a 2Gb sandisk2 cfcard which has been pretty cool.

Most of my pics are in my own personal gallery so most of you won’t see them but I have set up an underutilised flickr account which I might start using more in the future.. of course when my photo’s become worthwhile uploading :-)
